Why Do You Feel Light Headed While Following a Ketogenetic Diet & Intermittent Fasting?Updated a month ago

If you are feeling lightheaded while practicing Healthy Keto® and Intermittent Fasting, you are likely experiencing low blood volume or low blood pressure. Here is why this happens and how you can fix it.

The "Keto Flush" Effect

When you switch from a high-carb diet to keto, your body undergoes a major shift. Carbs cause the body to retain a significant amount of fluid. As you cut the carbs and your insulin levels drop, your body releases that stored water. However, as that fluid leaves, it takes vital electrolytes with it.

How to Remedy Lightheadedness

To eliminate that dizzy feeling, you must replenish your mineral stores immediately:

  • Sea Salt is Key: One of the fastest ways to increase blood volume is to drink water with a pinch of high-quality sea salt. This helps the body retain the necessary amount of fluid to maintain stable blood pressure.
  • Don't Forget the Others: While salt helps blood pressure, you must also increase your intake of potassium and magnesium. These minerals ensure your heart and nervous system are functioning correctly during the transition.
  • The Plain Water Trap: Drinking large amounts of plain water without electrolytes can actually make you feel worse. It further dilutes the minerals already in your system, worsening the imbalance.

What if You Aren't on Keto?

If you are experiencing lightheadedness but are not on a ketogenic diet, it could be a sign of other underlying issues, such as:

  • Weak Adrenals: Your adrenal glands help regulate blood pressure.
  • Anemia: Low iron or B12 levelsaffectingoxygen transport.
  • Low Blood Sugar: Hypoglycemia is often caused by a high-sugar diet or insulin resistance.
