Why do I feel nauseous when taking Vitamin D3 & K2?Updated 6 days ago

While our Vitamin D3 & K2 formula is designed with MCTs and ox bile to allow for use on an empty stomach, some individuals may still experience occasional nausea. This is most often attributed to the 20 mg of Zinc in the 10,000 IU and the 10 mg of Zinc in the 5,000 IU capsules.

The Zinc-Nausea Connection

Zinc is a highly effective mineral for immune support, but it can be sensitive to the stomach lining when there is no food present to buffer its absorption.

  • Gastric Irritation: On an empty stomach, zinc can interact directly with the gastric mucosa (stomach lining), which may trigger a brief wave of nausea or a "queasy" feeling.
  • The Chelated Difference: While we use a high-quality form of zinc to minimize this effect, individual sensitivity varies.
  • Detoxification Response: In some cases, zinc can stimulate a mild cleansing effect in the gut, which the body sometimes misinterprets as nausea.

How to Avoid Nausea

If you find yourself sensitive to the zinc content, Dr. Berg recommends the following adjustments:

  1. Take with a Small Snack: Even a few bites of healthy fat (like a piece of cheese, half an avocado, or a few nuts) can provide enough of a buffer to eliminate the nausea without disrupting your fast.
  2. Take at the End of a Meal: Moving your supplement to the end of your largest meal is the most effective way to ensure smooth digestion.
  3. Stay Hydrated: Drinking a full glass of water with the capsule can help dilute the mineral concentration in the stomach.
