What Brand of Whey Protein Does Dr. Berg Recommend?Updated a month ago

When selecting a high-quality whey protein powder, the source and processing methods are far more important than the marketing on the front of the tub. Since Dr. Berg does not have a specific brand recommendation for whey protein, it is essential to know how to read the label to ensure you are getting a clean, keto-friendly product.

Here are the best practices for choosing a premium grass-fed whey:

1. Verify the "100% Grass-Fed" Claim

Many brands claim "grass-fed" even if the cows are finished on grain. Look for certifications that guarantee the cows are pasture-raised year-round.

  • Why it matters:Grass-fed whey has a superior nutritional profile, including higher levels of Omega-3 fatty acids and CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid), which Dr. Berg highlights for supporting a healthy metabolism.

2. Choose "Cold-Processed" or "Undenatured."

Standard whey is often heated to high temperatures (pasteurized) multiple times, which can denature the delicate protein sub-fractions.

  • The Goal: Look for cold-processed whey. This preserves the "biologically active" components, such as immunoglobulins and lactoferrin, which support your immune system and gut health.

3. Isolate vs. Concentrate

  • Whey Protein Isolate:This is filtered to remove almost all lactose and fat. It is typically higher in protein (90%+) and is the best choice if you are sensitive to dairy or looking for the lowest carbohydrate count.
  • Whey Protein Concentrate: This contains more of the natural, healthy fats and some lactose. If it is high-quality and cold-processed, it can be very beneficial, but ensure it is at least 80% protein.

4. Avoid "Fillers."

Check the ingredient list for added fillers.

  • Avoid: Added sugars, maltodextrin, corn syrup solids, and artificial flavors or colors.
  • Dr. Berg’s Tip:Watch out for "soy lecithin" used as an emulsifier. Seek outsunflower lecithinor no lecithin at all to avoid GMO soy.

5. Sweeteners and Flavors

To stay in ketosis and keep your insulin low, avoid any whey sweetened with sucralose, aspartame, or acesulfame potassium.

  • Keto-Friendly Options: Look for versions sweetened with Stevia, Monk Fruit, or Erythritol.Unflavored whey is often the cleanest option, as it lets you control the flavor and sweetness yourself.
