Does taking a collagen supplement stop your body from producing its own collagen naturally?Updated 22 days ago

Based on Dr. Berg’s teachings, it is generally safe and beneficial to take a high-quality collagen supplement every day.

There is a common concern that taking a supplement might "shut down" your body’s natural production (as some hormones do), but collagen is different. Collagen is a protein, and consuming it provides the specific building blocks (amino acids) your body needs to create its own.

Does it stop your body from making its own?

No. In fact, the opposite is true. Consuming collagen provides a high concentration of specific amino acids, such as glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline. When these enter your system, they act as "signals" to your cells (fibroblasts) to actually increase natural collagen production.

Dr. Berg often explains that as we age—especially after age 50—our natural ability to synthesize collagen drops significantly. Supplementing doesn't "take away" that ability; it provides the raw materials that your body is likely struggling to find in a modern diet.
